Overview of the evolution of digital screens in Europe

The fourth quarter of 2011 was a good quarter for theaters converting to digital cinema in Western Europe as 1,943 screens went digital, recording the highest quarterly net gain for the year. With another 541 digital screens being deployed in Central and Eastern Europe in the quarter, a total of 8,342 new digital screens were converted in 2011 – a new record up from 5,500 in 2010. With this increase, more than 18,500 digital screens are now active in Europe – 15,255 in Western Europe and 3,256 digital screens in Central and Eastern Europe. There are now six digital cinema territories in Europe with more than 1,000 digital screens, of which three have in excess of 2,000 screens including Germany, France and the U.K. Germany hit this benchmark in the fourth quarter after if added 310 screens, the largest addition for the country of all time. France has more than 3,600 screens accounting for the largest number of digital cinemas in Europe. While there were a number of 2-D only digital conversions in the fourth quarter, digital 3-D screens still account for the majority of the total digital screen base at 61.0 percent, down from 73.3 percent at the beginning of 2011. It is too early to give an exact number of screens in Europe as of 2011, but based on almost comprehensive 2010 data we can estimate that there were about 35 500 screens in Europe in 2010. This means that by the end of 2011 over 52% of European screens had been digitized.

The EPC deplores the rejection of the French anti-piracy law

It is of an utmost importance for the Members of French parliament to legislate on piracy, thus counteracting the threat it poses to the French culture industry. The parliamentarians’ mobilization is essential for the safekeeping of cultural diversity and the preservation of jobs in the cultural fields. It is the French parliament’s responsibility to lead the way for other European countries in the fight against piracy. > Read full position paper
