COMPANY PROFILE

Organised in four different areas (production, distribution, international sales and exhibition), Filmax is nowadays one of the leading companies of the Spanish audiovisual sector.

Initially founded as a distributor in 1953, Filmax was acquired by Julio Fernández in 1987. Since then, the Barcelona-based company has produced more than 90 feature films; productions that have been awarded, acclaimed and projected internationally such as DARKNESS (Jaume Balagueró, 2002);THE MACHINIST (2004), with Christian Bale and directed by Brad Anderson; THE PERFUME (2006) a fantastical thriller directed by Tom Tykwer; the horror saga [REC] (2007 – 2014), directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza; TRANSSIBERIAN (Brad Anderson, 2008) with Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer; THE WAY (Emilio Estévez, 2009) a coproduction between Spain and the United States starring Martin Sheen; and SLEEP TIGHT (Jaume Balagueró, 2011), a thriller with Luis Tosar and Marta Etura.

More recently, Filmax has brought to the big screen the films 100 METRES (Marcel Barrena, 2016), an amazing story of a man fighting against all odds; the supernatural thriller MUSE (2017), directed by Jaume Balagueró and starring Elliot Cowan, Ana Ularu, Leonor Watling, Franka Potente, and Christopher Lloyd; CROSS THE LINE (2020) an electrifying thriller directed by David Victori and starring Mario Casas, who won the Goya Award for Best Actor for his performance in the film; the erotic comedy SWINGERS (Paco Caballero, 2021); and LEMON AND POPPY SEED CAKE, a drama directed by the acclaimed Benito Zambrano which was nominated to the Goya Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

For television, the company produced the series RED BRACELETS (2011, 28 x 42’, Televisió de Catalunya); DATES (2015, 26 x 45’, Televisió de Catalunya), I KNOW WHO YOU ARE (2017, 16 x 70’) – a gripping thriller broadcast nationally on prime-time by Telecinco

with excellent audience ratings that was also broadcast by BBC Four in the United Kingdom - and WELCOME TO THE FAMILY (2018 and 2019, 26 x 50’, Televisió de Catalunya). The series can also be seen on Netflix. The platform also commissioned the original mini-series THREE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS (2019, 3 x 60’) developed and produced, as all other Filmax’s television series, by showrunner Pau Freixas. The company’s latest television production EVERYONE LIES was broadcast on the platform Movistar + in January 2022.

Filmax also stands out for being one of the Spanish companies that has invested the most in animation, producing films such as SNOWFLAKE (Andrés G. Schaer, 2011), which mixed life action and animation; NOCTURNA (Víctor Maldonado and Adrián García, 2007); EL CID: THE LEGEND (José Pozo, 2003); and the two films which have as their protagonist the mouse Pérez: THE HAIRY TOOTH FAIRY (Juan Pablo Buscarini, 2006) and its sequel, directed by Andrés G. Schaer in 2007. The company also participated in the production of TURU, THE WACKY HEN, a new animation feature inspired by a famous children’s song, which was directed by Juan Pablo Buscarini and was released on January 1st 2020. The film won the Goya Award to Best Animated Feature.
