Founded in Lisbon in April 2015, Arquipélago Filmes is dedicated to producing high-quality drama series and independent cinema. The company works closely with creators to encourage the development of significant works and has developed fiction projects for both film and television. In 2019, Arquipélago Filmes presented the 9-episode noir crime series Sul, directed by Ivo M. Ferreira. The series premiered at the Berlinale in the “Drama Series Days” section and aired on RTP1 in September 2019. In 2020, Sul won the Sophia Award from the Portuguese Film Academy for Best Series/TV Movie and the Best Fiction Program Award from the Portuguese Society of Authors. In 2022, the company released the 7-episode legal drama Causa Própria, created by Edgar Medina and Rui Cardoso Martins and directed by João Nuno Pinto, which aired on RTP1. In 2023, Causa Própria received the Sophia Award for Best Series/TV Movie from the Portuguese Film Academy and the Best Fiction Program Award from the Portuguese Society of Authors. In 2023, the short film 2720 by Basil da Cunha was released. It went on to be nominated for the European Film Awards and screened at Visions du Réel, winning the FIPRESCI Prize at Oberhausen International Film Festival, the Audience Award at Curtas Vila do Conde 2023, Best Short Film at Journées de Soleure 2024, and the European Best Film Award at Clermont-Ferrand, among others (15 awards and 67 official selections). In 2024, Arquipélago Filmes released the 7-episode fiction series Matilha, created by Edgar Medina and directed by João Maia. Premiering on RTP1 and Prime Video Portugal, Matilha was selected for the Berlinale Series Market Selects and won the 2025 Sophia Award from the Portuguese Film Academy for Best Series/TV Movie.
