With offices in Amsterdam, London, Antwerp and Los Angeles, Submarine is an Emmy award-winning production company that develops and produces animation from preschool series to family features, scripted series and features, documentaries, and transmedia projects. Since 2023 Submarine is proud to have become a part of the Mediawan Group.

Submarine has established itself as an innovative company, working across multiple genres and platforms, all with an international focus. It also owns the largest animation studio in The Netherlands. Submarine boasts a roster of award-winning films and series made in collaboration with an extensive network of internationally acclaimed creators.

Currently the animated feature FOX AND HARE SAVE THE FOREST directed by Mascha Halberstad has started its premiere run at the Berlinale 2024. Next to this, Submarine is currently in production on a journalistic conspiracy thriller, THE KOLLECTIVE by ZEROZEROZERO showrunner Leonardo Fasoli, and SAFE HARBOR, a crime drama from Ozark co-creator Mark Williams - The Netherlands largest budget English language series to date.

Upcoming projects include A.D.D. a drama set in the world of E-Sports following a female professional searching for her missing brother; SPIKE a 3D animated family feature film with the South Africa co-production (Diprente), GHOST GENERATION, a heist series about the reemergence of the Red Army Faction on the Dutch-German border; PROLIFERATION, a biographical drama about nuclear scientist AQ Khan and his establishing of the black market for nuclear secrets; Animated series KIRANMALA based on the book series: Kiranmala and the Kingdom Beyond by Sayantani DasGupta. ECHO BOY, a sci-fi thriller based on the book by NY Times best-selling author Matt Haig, and projects in development with Studio 101, Wildside, Stephen Daldry, and BBC Film.

Submarine has produced many acclaimed films and animations such as the Emmy Award-winning feature LAST HIJACK, Emmy-nominated animation series PICNIC WITH CAKE, THE WELLIE WISHERS for Amazon Prime, and DOOPIE which was in 2020 nominated for International Kids. Submarine’s documentary BELLINGCAT: TRUTH IN A POST-TRUTH WORLD won an Emmy for best feature documentary in 2019.

Submarine animation has also produced the animated feature film THEY SHOT THE PIANO PLAYER directed by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal (the duo behind the feature CHICO AND RITA). Two seasons of the Amazon Prime series UNDONE by Bojack Horseman creators Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob Waksberg, TWO TINY TODDLERS, which was the first CGI film to be entirely animated in The Netherlands, Richard Linklater’s film APOLLO 10½: A SPACE AGE CHILDHOOD on Netflix and animated bonus episode of the Netflix Sandman series called A DREAM OF A THOUSAND CATS.

Furthermore, Submarine has worked with Emmy Award Oscar-winning director Roger Ross Williams’ documentary AMERICAN JAIL for CNN and the BBC Peter Greenaway’s EISENSTEIN IN GUANAJUATO, the Netflix Original NOBODY SPEAK: TRIAL OF THE FREE PRESS that premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2017 and the animation BUÑUEL IN THE LABYRINTH OF THE TURTLES, which won the jury award at Annecy Festival in 2019.

 

FEMKE WOLTING 

Critically acclaimed producer, Femke Wolting, is the co-founder of Submarine, an Emmy award-winning production company based between Amsterdam, Los Angeles and London, which develops and produces feature films, scripted series, documentaries, animation and transmedia projects. 

Under Wolting, Submarine has established itself as an innovative company, working across multiple genres and platforms, all with an international focus. She has produced a number of highly acclaimed productions, including Peter Greenaway’s EISENSTEIN IN GUANAJUATO that premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2015, the Emmy Award-winning LAST HIJACK, Oscar-winning director Roger Ross Williams’ AMERICAN JAIL for CNN and the BBC, and the Netflix Original NOBODY SPEAK: TRIALS OF THE FREE PRESS that premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2017. The 2018 documentary, BELLINGCAT: TRUTH IN A POST-TRUTH WORLD, which covered the rise of the first ever citizen-journalist collective, won an Emmy for best feature documentary in 2019.  

Wolting has also been behind Amazon Prime’s gender-bending original scripted animation series, UNDONE Season 1 and 2, from Bojack Horseman show runners Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob Waksberg and directed by HISKO HULSING and Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood for Netflix (2022) from Oscar-nominated director Richard Linklater. Upcoming projects include Proliferation, based on the book ‘Fallout: The True Story of the CIA’s Secret War on Nuclear Trafficking’, political thriller, THE KOLLECTIVE, by GOMORRAH and ZEROZEROZERO showrunner, Leonardo Fasoli, ECHO BOY, a futuristic thriller based on the novel by New York Times bestseller, Matt Haig, developed by screenwriter, Jamie Crighton (THE LAST KINGDOM, THE TUNNEL, RIPPER STREET), and FACTION, a drama series by Jane Eden (THE SPLIT), with Miguel Alexandre (BLACK ISLAND) directing.  She also has a feature in development with Stephen Daldry and BBC Film.

Wolting has produced films, series, and transmedia projects across the globe, from the US and China to Abu Dhabi, Russia, and Mexico. Wolting and Submarine’s co-founder Bruno Felix are experienced in coordinating international co-productions and collaborating with co-producers, broadcasters, and distributors including VPRO, BBC, HBO, ZDF, Arte, Channel 4, Amazon, and Netflix.

Together with Femke Wolting, Bruno Felix is the founder and Managing Director of Submarine, an independent film, television, and transmedia production company, spanning features, documentaries, and animation. Submarine boasts a roster of award-winning productions made in collaboration with an extensive network of internationally acclaimed creators.

Not only has Bruno experience in coordinating international co-productions, and collaborating with co-producers, broadcasters, and distributors including VPRO, BBC, HBO, ZDF, Netflix, and Amazon, Bruno has also produced many award-winning animation series that have been sold to broadcasters around the world, such as Emmy-nominated series PICNIC WITH CAKE, THE WELLIE WISHERS for Amazon Prime, DOOPIE which was in 2020 nominated for International Kids Emmy Award and the feature film BUÑUEL IN THE LABYRINTH OF THE TURTLES, which won the jury award at Annecy Festival in 2019.

APOLLO 10 ½ is an innovative hybrid of live-action and a combination of hand-drawn and computer-animated imagery. Directed and written by Richard Linklater, the film is set against the backdrop of the 1969 Apollo mission to the moon and is inspired by Linklater’s childhood in Houston, TX. The film will debut on Netflix in 2022. Linklater used a similar approach in his 2001 movie ‘Waking Life’, which was shot using digital video of live actors and then rotoscoped with artists.

Undone is a half-hour genre-bending animation series that explores the elastic nature of reality through its central character, Alma (Rosa Salazar), a 28-year-old assistant at a kindergarten school living in San Antonio, Texas. After getting into a near-fatal car accident, she discovers she has a new relationship with time and uses her ability to uncover the truth about the death of her father (Bob Odenkirk) during her much younger years.
